  1. Joannie,

  3. Joannie,

    Ms. Rochette,

I had heard your story on the news on that fateful day you lost you Mother. I live in Vancouver and watched the Olympics intensely. I never paid much attention to Figure Skating, and never did it myself. When I watched your short program that night here in Vancouver, and watched you skate, trying hard to hold back your tears until the end, it both turned me on to your amazing sport and inspired me in my life. I have my own problems, as most people, but to watch you pull off such an amazing performance in spite of all that was working against you, it really inspired me. Whenever I have doubts and fears about doing something, I will now always have you in my mind, and will find the courage to go on.

So now your a national hero, and you have a bronze medal in something that you are good at and love. But I just wanted you to know that you have even more than that. You also can have the satisfaction that your tragedy and perseverance have really helped others the world like me. And that is a wonderful legacy for both you and your late Mother.

    You are my hero.

    xxxooo Matthew, Vancouver BC.

  5. Hi Joannie,

You don’t just have supporters in your town, you have supporters all over Canada. Many people say you have inspired them, but I truly am inspired by you. My mother too had a heart attack..at 49 years old. She wasn’t expected to live. You have given me the strength to reach my goals and believe in myself. You have taught me that anything is possible. I want to thank you. You don’t know how much you have changed my life. I really hope you read these messages because I want you to know that you are making a big difference in my life and I want to sincerely thank you for that. Honestly, without you..I don’t know what would have happened. I finally realized what it means to do what you love and let nothing stop you. You are such an inspiration and I can’t say enough. You gave me the strength to move on and accept the challenges that come my way. Thank you Joannie, thank you so much for inspiring me to live my life.

I hope you read this, because you need to know how much of a difference you have made to me.

Thank you- Congratulations on your medal and your performance in Vancouver. You have made Canada proud, and even better..you made me proud. Let this be a time for celebrating your mothers’ life and all that she gave you. May all your memories of her come back and let you celebrate her life..don’t think of it as losing her..think of it as gaining more precious memories of her..

    Thanks again for your inspiration..
    Your loving fan from Ontario:

    Emma

  13. My heart goes out to you and your dad. Take comfort in the memories of your mom and know that she will live on in you forever. I want to share a poem with you that I took comfort in when my grandma passed away:

“When those we love go away, they never really leave us; they are with us now, wherever we are. Those whom we have cherished, live on forever, for love wraps itself around the heart. Although it’s difficult now, someday beyond our tears, we shall understand.” xoxo

  14. Joannie,

We are glad to know that you reached home safely. You have arrived home a hero. You are not only a hero to Canada, but to the world, and in our hearts.

We are near the same age as your parents, and we know that your mother’s life was too short. You have taught us, through your winning victory, that we must continue to live, and live each day to the fullest. We remember the loved one we lost, and let them continue to live in us and through us. May God give your heart comfort at this time, and in His time fill your life with joy and strength.

    With our love,

  15. Cara Joannie:
