  2. Joannie, I just wanted to say I am sad with you. I am 10 years old and my mom has been taking me to skating lessons and competitions and I always need her there. I can’t believe that you did your skate in Vancouver so good. You make me believe I can be strong too. I think you helped a lot of kids who skate, but also those in other sports or even those just needing to find strength for their problems. YOU are my HERO! I LOVE YOU!

  6. Dear Joanne,
I have become a fan of yours now, especially after I saw you perform last night, and I really hope and am praying for you that you win the Gold Medal. I am so sorry for the great loss of your Mother, and I want you to know that when I was 15 years old, I lost my father of a cerebral Hemorage. I am really pulling for you and know that with each day that goes by, the deep wound heals a little at a time. Everybody grievs differently, but know that your Mother would be soo proud of you and know that she will always be in your heart. I am from the United States, and I think you are a brillant skater and you really deserve the Gold medal and I know that you will get it, because you have a lot of people all over the world praying and pulling for you. God Bless you Joanne

  27. Joannie,

There are no words that can ever make things easier. I cannot attempt to say I understand how you feel, but I did want to share my experience briefly with you in hopes that you take a small measure of comfort. January 21st 2010 was when my younger sister Carissa was unexpectedly taken from me in a car crash not too far from my house after moving to SK to live near me. She was only 19, and she was far too young to be taken, as was your mom… She loved your skating; we both did! Both being “small-town, small-time” skaters ourselves we watched you at Canadians in Saskatoon and were hoping to track you down for a picture but missed you. She had just finished her CFSA coaching course and passed her level one a week prior to her accident, she had been coaching Canskate back home before moving, and her and I were both planning on a lot more ice time together that we never got to have. I know she will be cheering you on from heaven, and I’m sure she is tracking your mom down to watch your performances with some company… she was never the shy one!

All my thoughts and prayers are with you,

  38. I am a writer who used to skate, and was inspired by your flawless short program and the courage within it to write the following:

    Shimmering Spirit of Thérèse

She filled sad-stormy eyes, tear-tricked cheeks
awash with shock-sick flood of sudden pass.
She lit perfect turns of landing-luminous lutz
and flared and flashed in flight of triple flip.
    She sit-spin sparkled, spiral-sequence shone,
in footwork fantasy-effulgent, warm golden gleam
of mother-glow in edge-work dazzle evident.
And as with every jump Joannie grew in craft
and confidence, all could openly observe at work
within her sweet shimmering Spirit of Thérèse.

  61. Hi Joannie!

I have been a big supporter and fan of you since first seeing you on tv back in 2004 at the Cup of China skating to Firebird. I recognized your talent and great skills immediately. You are that terrific combination of strength and grace on the ice! I’ve watched your career closely ever since that day seeing you on tv for the first time and I’ve followed you through your journey of emotions, the ups and the downs, always admiring your perseverance. I’m so proud to be your fan and you have really inspired me with your courage in the face of tragedy and adversity at the Vancouver Olympic Games. Thank you for the gift you have given me as a fan – the gift of the true heart, courage, and determination of a champion! I’m sure you have made your mama, your family, and your fans all over the world proud and gracious with the way you have handled yourself during these Olympics. Your mama’s love will always be with you, a guardian angel always there to protect you and provide you strength and peace through everything you do. I wish you all the best, Joannie . . . you truly deserve it! Peace and love to you always!!! :)

  64. I am a Canadian citizen but I am now living in the USA, a nation where I have been living for over eight years. before that, I’ve resided in Canada for a total of nine-and-a-half to about ten years. hearing about something tragic like this is just really sad and unbearable. Joannie, I am really sorry to hear about your mother’s death. I know how you feel. Everyone knows how you feel. If it were my mother, I would also feel the same way.anyway, you are among the greatest figure-skaters I’ve been a big fan of. you ought to be proud of what you are and what you have already become, a great and highly-distinguished figure skater. I am sure your mother is already looking down at you, smiling at you, watching you come through successfully throughout the ongoing figure-skating Olympic Games. watching you becoming a world-class figure skating sensation. just keep doing your thing. I’m sure you will end up capturing the Olympic gold medal. you are a great figure skater. you’ve become what is believed to be an inspiration to so many figure-skating fans, Canadians in particular. you have pride and determination to successfully finish up where you left off in hopes of making it all happen. just don’t let it all disappear. hold onto your faith and like I said, just keep doing your thing. and if necessary, you may also want to say these two words “Pride, Power” twice before the moment you walk out onto that figure-skating arena, the place where thousands and millions of people will be cheering for you as well the place where you will eventually be shooting for that medal, winning through heart and determination. we all wish you the best as well as your mother, who is now in a better place, where god is taking extra care of her. just hang in there. your moment will come.

  66. Hi Joannie,

This has understandably been a rough time for you and your father, when it was supposed to be a joyous occasion for both of you and your mother. I grieve along with many others in this world for your loss.

  75. Hi Joannie,

I just wanted to let you know how inspired you have made me feel. For your courage and strength, I now feel that things in life are more possible than ever before. When you stepped out onto the ice despite experiencing such a tragedy so recently, I could not help but cry. I cried because of how beautiful and strong I think you are inside and out. Under the circumstances, you were extraordinary. I would never be able to accomplish what you have accomplished, nor would I have had the strength to face the ice after such demise.

I believe that you have won gold in my heart and in the hearts of all of us. You fought so hard and still you came so close to the top despite your pain. To do so well with such a burden in your heart has amazed me. Keep doing what you do and being the best you can be. If you can do it here and now, you will always rise to the top.

I know that your mother was there with you every step of the way, and just as she would do while she was here, she will carry on her duties to you as your mother and will always be around for you.

I hope you have the opportunity to read my message…I will always remember you Joannie. You will always be Canadas most courageous and succesful Olympic Performer in my eyes and in my heart.

    Take Care, God Bless,
And Much Love from Brampton Ontario, Canada

Please know that we are with you in this journey as the Olympic Games come to an end. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your father. I want to share a poem that has given me strength these past years…”Turn Again To Life”….If I should die and leave you here awhile, Be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep. For my sake, turn again to life and smile, nerving thy heart and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts then thine. Complete those dear unfinished tasks of mine, and I, perchance, may therin comfort you.

  121. Hey Joannie :
I don’t know if you’ll ever read this but I just had to say something. Honestly being a guy, figure skating has never been much of a draw for me. But after hearing about the untimely passing of your mom ( and my sincerest condolence for your loss ) I was drawn to checking out your performance. I was unable to view them live due to other commitments but scoured the internet trying to find some videos of the event, which I finally found. Within moments of watching you take the ice it was all I could do to fight the tears back. You took to the ice with the utmost professionalism and grace that any representative of this country could hope to have. Under circumstances that I can imagine would be nothing other than completely overwhelming on all fronts.
Also found the video of your free skate, medal presentation and the interview afterward. If I remember nothing else of the Olympic games of 2010 I’ll always remember your most triumphant run for your medal.
I’ve never been so proud and honored to be a Canadian and have such a courageous, classy, and committed representative for our country as yourself. Canada is that much a better place to have someone with the fortitude and pride you have for your country representing it. I’m so sorry for your loss of your mom but I’m sure she’s watching over you and beaming with the utmost pride only a mother can have for her child who accomplished so much through such adversity on the world stage of the Olympics.

    God bless.

  122. Dear Joannie,
When I heard the details of your mother passing at the age of 55 of a heart attack, A chill went through me and I had to sit down. I could not hold back the tears. It brought back painful memories of when my mother passed away 4 years ago this march. She was 55 and died of a heart attack. I can not believe the mental strength and courage you showed in your two skates. That alone would have been an amazing display, but to get the bronze medal as well is truly one of the greatest most inspiring stories I have ever heard in my life. Condolences and congratulations

Please, accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your mom. When I heard about your sorrow, I was so deeply impressed by the strength of your spirit and, of course, by your performance – it made me cry. I am not Canadian, but I think, that some events unite people regardless of their nationalities, citizenship, etc. I can’t imagine how you could do this heroic deed for your country … God bless you, dear Joannie!

I have been a fan of yours ever since i started skating at the age of 8 and i have always aspired to be an amazing skater, just as you are. Skating at the Olympics so soon after your mothers passing made me really know why i idolize you so much. Your so strong and brave, and the amazing skates you had, under the circumstances, showed me how truly talented you are.I was crying after your Short Program, and i Knew you would medal!
I am deeply sorry for the loss of your mom and i know you’ll make it through this tough time. your fans are all here cheering you on.<3

  136. Both my daughter and my niece have skated competitively. Speaking about your incredible short program the next day, both my sister and I said that we could hear your mother saying, “You’re going out on that ice, Joannie”. A mother who’s been through what I’m sure she has been through with you would have had it no other way. You were the picture of strength and grace for you and your mother. Be very proud.

    Comment by Elaine — 26 February 2010 @ 19:31

  137. Joannie, the strength that you have shown to the whole world has been amazing. Losing your mum, your best friend, is something I can’t even begin to comprehend. I don’t think there are even words that can describe that kind of grief. The courage that you displayed to skate during practice on Sunday and continue to compete at the Games is something that is truly awe inspiring. To then go onto obtain the bronze medal… your performances were amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever been so emotional watching skating before – I shed more than my fair share of tears during both programs, and I’m pretty sure I was joined by millions of others around the world. You and your family have never been far from my thoughts over the past few days, and at the end of your short program I just wanted to reach out and give you a hug. I know it probably sounds corny, but you have inspired me and so many people to just keep on battling on in life, even when life throws up a cruel blow. Never give up.

I’m sure your mum is smiling down on you right now, more proud than ever of her daughter who kept fighting for both their dreams even when life was more cruel than it should ever have been. You’ve made us all proud. :)

I am so truly sorry for you and your family’s loss. Stay strong Joannie, my thoughts and prayers are with you right now.

    *huge hugs* :)

  139. Dear Joannie,
I lost my father to illness when I was in my teens, and now, in my mid-twenties, my mother has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. I have felt frequently like giving up and quitting school…at least for a while…and then I watched your performance at the Olympics. You have inspired me. If you can go on to win Bronze at the Olympics, then maybe I can finish this next semester. After the media is gone and the fanfare is over, many people, including myself, will continue to think about your tremendous courage in the face of adversity and be thankful for the example you have set. I know from experience that the next few years for you will not be easy, but someday it will not hurt so badly.
Best wishes to you and your father,

  143. Dear Joannie,
How very proud every Canadian is of your courageous spirit and enormous accomplishment in the face of such tragedy. Your mother had 24 short years to influence and mold you and what a fine job she has done– she would be so proud of you and the whole world is able to know what a wonderful person your mother was, because her legacy will live on forever in you. Although your mother is no longer here on earth, mothers live on forever in our hearts. I know this to be true as I lost my own mother fifteen years ago when I was twenty. Your mother will always be there to guide you and you will develop a beautiful relationship with your father. Bless you, dear one. You have touched the hearts of the world and you are loved.

I must thank you for being such a strong role model for our children. Children who undoubtedly watched in awe as a beautiful young Canadian figure skater performed so gracefully yet strong with a broken heart barely hidden from view. The teachings of determination and dedication fueled by LOVE will be replayed in their minds for the rest of their lives.

  150. Joannie,

    You really are an inspiration.

To be able to face such grief with strong spirit and determination speaks to your character. What an excellent tribute to your mother – she would be so proud. Many would not have been able to continue had they been forced into your place, but you did with so with grace and emotion.

My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Please know you have the support of Canadians everywhere.

While watching your performance from our home in a Vancouver suburb, my 11 year old daughter grew still when she saw the emotion on your face as you skated through your routine. She skooted over to me and held on to my arm, whispering that you were ’so strong’ to follow your dream after having suffered such a terrible loss. You have touched the young and the old, Joannie, and for that, we are ever grateful.

WHAT A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO YOUR MOTHER’S LIFE!! MAY YOU AND YOUR PAPA GROW EVEN CLOSER AS YOU RETURN HOME. WE WILL BE THINKING OF YOU AND PRAYING FOR YOU.

  189. I’ve been watching the Olympics since 1988 when I was 12, so I have seen a few Olympics. I will never forget the 2010 Winter Olympics, and the performance you had under the circumstances. I am not sure if many could had performed the way you did. I am not sure if I could had competed. I can tell you that here in the USA, you have captured a lot of hearts, and we are all behind you. I know it will be tough when you go back home, and having some private time with your family will do you a lot of good. It was great seeing you hold the flag of your proud nation at the Closing Cermonies tonight. It was good to see you smile. You are a beautiful figure skater too. I wish you the best in this tough time. I know each day things will get better and better. Just remember you have all of us, your fans standing behind you and your family. I look forward to seeing you compete in Torino later this year. Best of luck with your career, and I wish you and your family the best.

  190. Congratulations on your medal. You inspired me with your strength and poise. I enjoyed reading that you like tuna. All of my family and my friends were rooting for you and we were shouting and crying when you won a medal. It was wonderful to watch. Thank you for stirring so much emotion within us. Our thoughts are with you and please be comforted by knowing that we support you and are sending you strength and tons of good luck through our thoughts.

  193. Dear Joannie,
Just wanted to let you know that I’ve been praying for you and your dad in this very difficult time. You overcame huge obstacles in completing your performance to win the bronze medal and for that we are all grateful and proud. When you mentioned a source of strength that you have felt getting you through this time, I firmly believe that it’s God’s strength you’re feeling. Take care of yourself when you have to return home, see your family, and say your final goodbye to your mother. All of Canada will be remembering you and your loved ones in thought and many will also be praying for you. You’ve touched the hearts of Canadians and the rest of the world in a way that we will not forget. God bless you XO

  195. Hello Joannie,

Please accept my deepest condolences for the passing of your mother.

The courage and determination you displayed last week was just incredible. Reading about you in the paper the past week has been truly inspiring and really puts everyday struggles into perspective. Thanks.

I know most of the country watched the hockey game last night, but I believe as time passes, it is your story that people will talk about and remember from these olympics……(After all, if the hockey team had half of your strength and heart they would have won 15-0 instead of by a lucky goal in O.T.)lol.

    Congratulations on your medal,

    Hang in there,

    Good luck.

    Toronto.
